Apologies to anyone with a birthday in the upcoming month, but, let's be honest, January famously kind of sucks. April Fool's Day (4K UHD) - Kino Lorber Films
It might only be January but it's never too early to get into the spirit of April Fool's Day by grabbing a copy of the underappreciated cult classic April Fool's Day, hitting 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Films. The two-disc release from Kino Lorber features the remastered film on one disc, a brand new HDR and Dolby Vision master from a 4K scan of the original camera negative, plus a new audio commentary by film historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson. The second, all region Blu-ray disc comes with special features such as interviews with Director Fred Walton and star Deborah Goodrich.
Pre-order April Fool’s Day ahead of its January 21 release from Kino Lorber’s website now.
Azrael (Blu-ray) - IFC Films
Scream queen Samara Weaving added another horror string to her bow this year with Azrael, E.L. Katz's post-apocalyptic bloodbath, in which she gives an outstanding performance without saying a single world. The film is set in a world where survivors of a religious rapture have severed their own vocal cords to stop them from speaking sin – and attracting the attention of humanoid demon nightmare creatures. The upcoming Blu-ray from IFC Films includes a commentary from E.L. Katz, writer-producer Simon Barrett and producer Dan Kagan, as well as BTS clips and special FX insights from FX wizard Dan Martin (Possessor, Infinity Pool, Stopmotion).
Pre-order your copy of Azrael here for a January 21 release date.
Cure (4K UHD) - Eureka Video
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's dark and dangerous Cure comes to 4K UHD courtesy of Eureka! Videos' Masters of Cinema series. The 1997 crime thriller stars Kōji Yakusho as a detective investigating a string of strange murders, the only connection seemingly being an X carved on the victims' mutilated bodies. The new release comes with a ton of extras, including a new interview with Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho (one of Cure‘s biggest fans), archival interviews with Kurosawa and a new essay from Japanese cinema expert Tom Mes.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (Collector's Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray) - Scream Factory
Dracula fans have been spoiled for choice over the last couple of years, with André Øvredal's The Last Voyage of the Demeter being a particular highlight. Starring Corey Hawkins, David Dastmalchian, Aisling Franciosi and Liam Cunningham, the 2023 horror is based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's 1897 classic Dracula, in which the titular count is transported (without the crew's knowledge) from his home in the Carpathian Mountains to London. Scream Factory's Collector's Edition comes with exclusive posters, commentaries from both Dastmalchian and Øvredal, deleted scenes, an alternate opening and much more.
Incubus (Limited Edition 4K UHD/Limited Edition Blu-ray) - Arrow Video
Filmed in (questionable) Esperanto, starring a pre-Star Trek William Shatner and once thought to be entirely lost, Leslie Stevens' Incubus is an eclectic piece of horror history that's been given the 4K treatment courtesy of Arrow Video. Restored from the last known surviving 35mm print, Arrow's Incubus features new and archive audio commentaries, including one from Shatner himself, as well as newly filmed interviews and an illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film.
Pre-order your copy of Incubus ahead of its January 13 release date.
Smile 2 (4K UHD SteelBook) - Paramount
One of FANGORIA's favorite horror movies of 2024, Parker Finn's Smile 2 was bigger, bolder and bloodier in every way, and left us wanting another 500 movies in the franchise. Starring Naomi Scott, Kyle Gallner, Rosemarie DeWitt and Ray Nicholson (seen on the newly designed gatefold cover), the sequel to 2022's smash hit Smile saw the fatal curse attach itself to popstar Skye Riley just as she is about to embark on a world tour. The upcoming 4K UHD SteelBook features a commentary from Finn. deleted scenes and documentaries.
Pre-order the Smile 2 4K UHD SteelBook here for a January 21 release.
The Substance (Blu-ray/4K UHD + Blu-ray combo) - MUBI
Coralie Fargeat's satirical body horror The Substance was one of 2024's most buzzed about horror movies, so it's really no surprise to see it be given the 4K UHD treatment it deserves. The Golden Globe-nominated horror, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, has topped pretty much every end-of-year Best Of list, including our own.
Pre-order The Substance via Diabolik DVD for a January 21 release right here.
Se7en (4K UHD SteelBook) - Warner Home Video
David Fincher's grisly crime thriller Se7en celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, and what better way to celebrate with a 4K UHD release accompanying select IMAX screenings. Starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey, 1995's Se7en follows two police detectives in a derelict and dangerous city as they try to stop a serial killer from committing a series of murders evocative of the seven deadly sins. Warner Home Video's new release is overseen by Fincher from the original negative, and features commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes and – gulp – John Doe's photographs, so you can see that Sloth victim in nightmarish HD quality.
Vampires (4K UHD + Blu-ray Collector's Edition) - Shout Factory
Horror maestro John Carpenter's 1998 cult classic Vampires creeps onto a brand new physical media release later this year via Shout Factory, with a two-disc special edition that features a new 4K restoration pulled from the original camera negative, as well as remastered audio and a commentary from Carpenter. Starring James Woods and Sheryl Lee, the horror western follows a team of vampire hunters looking to take down the oldest and most powerful bloodsucker of all time. Other special features on Shout Factory's new edition include interviews with cast and crew, a Making Of featurette and an exclusive poster.
Vampires releases on January 21, and is available for pre-order now.
Yellow Dragon's Village/Visitors (Blu-ray Double Feature) - Terror Vision
Last year saw a number of hugely exciting physical media releases for Japanese cinema fans, and it looks like 2025 is shaping up to be no different, with Terror Vision releasing a double feature of two indie horror gems, Yugo Sakamoto's bloody kung-fu rompYellow Dragon's Village and Ken'ichi Ugana's Visitors, which is described as The Evil Dead made by a Japanese Troma. Terror Vision's double feature is region free, and comes with interviews and a limited edition slipcover.
