10 Of The Best Upcoming 4K And Blu-Ray Horror Releases

French vampires, killer jeans and a Japanese found-footage classic make up the best of August.

Summer blockbuster season may be in full swing, but the physical media grind never stops. With August rearing its sweaty head, here are 10 of the best horror 4K and Blu-ray releases coming this month to chill your blood.

  • Bring Her Back (4K UHD/Blu-ray) - A24

Danny and Michael Philippou's terrifying Talk to Me follow-up Bring Her Back traumatized horror fans earlier this year, and thanks to A24 you can soon relive the experience in glorious 4K UHD from the comfort of your very own couch. Starring Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Jonah Wren Phillips and newcomer Sora Wong, the supernatural pic follows a brother and sister who, following the death of their mother, are placed into the care of a foster mother and introduced their new sibling, only to learn that he has a secret – and it ain't pretty. Special features on the Bring Her Back Blu-ray/4K release include a commentary with the directors, one deleted scene, and an in-depth making-of featurette, plus six collectible postcards with behind the scenes photography by Ingvar Kenne.

Pre-order Bring Her Back here for a release later this month.

  • Lips of Blood (4K UHD) - Powerhouse Films

If you missed your chance to get ahold of the deluxe edition of Powerhouse Films' Lips of Blood release, a new standard edition should quench your thirst. The Jean Rollin vamp classic contains all of the auteur's signature hallmarks – misty graveyards, dreamlike surrealism and a hefty helping of the erotique. Powerhouse's region-free release comes with newly-edited and archival interviews with Rollin, a new audio commentary by experts, critics and authors Stephen Jones and Kim Newman, critical appreciations and more.

Pre-order Lips of Blood here for an August 19 release.

  • Noroi: The Curse (Blu-ray Collector's Edition) - Umbrella Entertainment

Plenty of horror films like to boast that they feel cursed, but very few manage to actually do so better than Kōji Shiraishi's 2005 found-footage mockumentary Noroi: The Curse. The film follows a prominent paranormal journalist Kobayashi (Jin Muraki), who goes missing shortly after completing a documentary. What begins as an investigation into strange noises soon evolves into the terrifying mystery of a demonic entity named Kagutaba. Like all the best Japanese horrorsNoroi is a truly terrifying slow burn with an absolutely wild ending that has triggered plenty of sleepless nights. Umbrella's stacked release includes a 48 page book with behind-the-scenes, experiences, art, and essays by Ard Vijn and Simon J. Ballard, art cards and an A3 reversible poster.

Pre-order your copy of Noroi here for an August 6 release.

  • Slaxx (Standard Edition Blu-ray) - Shudder

In Elza Kephart's 2020 horror-comedy Slaxx, a possessed pair of jeans is brought to life and proceeds to wreak carnage on clothing company staff locked in overnight to set up the new collection. That should be enough to sell you on checking this surprisingly gory little slice of silliness and, if not, then maybe you just hate fun. Shudder and Vinegar Syndrome's release of Slaxx comes with an audio commentary with Kephart, co-writer/co-producer Patricia Gomez Zlatar and co-producer Anne-Marie Gélinas, and new writing on the movie by critic Tori Potenza. Sadly, the Limited Edition Slipcover is currently sold out, but the standard release is still well worth your time.

Grab your copy of Slaxx here.

  • The Cat (Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-ray) - 88 Films

Prolific Hong Kong filmmaker Lam Nai-Choi has blessed the genre world with some truly crazy features – The Seventh Curse, Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky and Erotic Ghost Story, to name but a few – but The Cat might take the cake as the most bonkers. The 1992 pic follows a trio of extraterrestrials, one of whom has the form of a cat, who team up with a novelist named Wisely to fight a malevolent alien that can possess humans. Has to be seen to be believed. 88 Films' release includes a 40-page book with new writing and gorgeous new artwork by Sean Longmore.

Pre-order The Cat here for release on August 25.

  • The Conjuring (Collector's Edition with Steelbook 4K Ultra HD) - Warner Bros.

With the release of Last Rites, the final (?) movie in The Conjuring franchise right around the corner, there's no better time to revisit the 2013 supernatural horror that began the highest-grossing horror franchise to date. James Wan's The Conjuring introduced the world to Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, tackling an apparent haunting at a Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971. The Collector's Edition SteelBook 4K UHD release comes with a double-sided poster, art cards, a 8-page booklet and Hide-and-Clap game instructions incase you feel like messing with demonic spirits.

Pre-order The Conjuring Collector's Edition here for an August 25 release.

  • The Innkeepers (Limited Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray) - Second Sight Films

Long before the X trilogy, Ti West directed The Innkeepers, a spooky haunted hotel horror starring Sara Paxton and Pat Healy as two employees at the IRL haunted Yankee Pedlar Inn who, during its last weekend of operations, attempt to document the alleged supernatural activity in the building. Spoiler alert – it's not alleged. Second Sight's Limited Edition release contains art cards and a 120-page book with new essays, an audio commentary with West, producers Larry Fessenden and Peter Phok, and Sound Designer Graham Reznick, behind-the-scenes footage, new interviews and more.

Pre-order The Innkeepers here for an August 25 release date.

  • The Strangers (Limited Edition SteelBook) - Shout! Factory

With the second chapter of Renny Harlin's The Strangers reboot premiering in September, no better time to familiarize yourself with the original version of the terrifying home invasion horror. Starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, Bryan Bertino's thriller centers on a couple whose night is interrupted by the arrival of three murderous masked strangers. Why? Because they were home, duh. Shout Factor's release includes the Unrated version of The Strangers, as well as deleted scenes, interviews and featurettes.

Pre-order The Strangers here for an August 12 release.

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Limited Edition 4K UHD) - Arrow

Arrow is bringing another 2000s slasher remake to 4K UHD with a new release of Marcus Nispel's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The remake of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, stars Jessica Biel as final girl Erin Hardesty, with Andrew Bryniarski as the masked maniac Leatherface. Although pretty poorly received upon release, the remake has gone on to garner something of a cult status, especially when reassessing the often unfairly maligned era of 00s horror. Arrow's release comes with audio commentaries, interviews, deleted scenes and much more.

Pre-order The Texas Chainsaw Massacre here for an August 26 release.

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (Limited Edition 4K UHD) - Arrow

Hey, if you're grabbing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, why not grab Jonathan Liebesman's prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning while you're at it? Sure, it wasn't received particularly warmly upon release (even less so than its predecessor) but with the wave of 2000s nostalgia in full swing, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is probably due a reappraisal any day now. As with the above, Arrow's release comes with commentaries, interviews, deleted scenes and more.

Pre-order The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning here for an August 26 release.
