Following today's exciting first trailer for 28 Years Later, it looks as though 28 Days Later, the film that started it all, is finally coming to digital via Sony Pictures, although no word yet on an official release date.
Released in 2002 with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland (both of whom are returning for 28 Years Later), 28 Days Later starred Cillian Murphy (also returning for the upcoming sequel) in his breakout role, Naomi Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Burns and Christopher Eccleston as survivors of a contagious, apocalyptic ‘rage' virus. A first sequel, 28 Weeks Later starring Robert Carlyle was released in 2007.
Previously, 28 Days Later was almost impossible to find online via legitimate sources, due to rights issues, notably, that the film was nowhere to be found on Disney-owned streaming platforms. But now, with 28 Years Later on the horizon, it looks like things might have settled down after producer Andrew MacDonald bought back the rights in February of this year, and selling to Sony ahead of the upcoming sequel.
As previously reported, 28 Years Later marks the first in a brand new trilogy of films the second of which, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is directed by Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta. No news yet on the third entry, or who will direct.
