It's a Christmas miracle – 28 Days Later is finally coming to digital, with a confirmed release date for purchase and rental via Sony Pictures of December 18.

Confirming the news today, Deadline also reveals that the recent trailer for 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel, is officially the second most watched horror trailer of all time, currently standing at 60.2 million global views (the number one record holder as of writing is still It Chapter Two, with 96 million views).

Released in 2002 with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland (both of whom are returning for 28 Years Later), 28 Days Later starred Cillian Murphy (also returning for the upcoming sequel – and no, NOT as that emaciated zombie in the trailer) in his breakout role, Naomi Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Burns and Christopher Eccleston as survivors of a contagious, apocalyptic ‘rage' virus. A first sequel, 28 Weeks Later starring Robert Carlyle was released in 2007.

As we previously reported, for many years 28 Days Later was almost impossible to find online via legitimate sources, due to rights issues, notably, that the film was nowhere to be found on Disney-owned streaming platforms. Producer Andrew MacDonald bought back the rights in February of this year, and selling to Sony ahead of the upcoming sequel.

28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, with Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Erin Kellyman leading the cast alongside Murphy. The first in a new trilogy, 28 Years Later will be followed by 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple from Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta. No news yet on the third entry, or who will direct.

Look out for 28 Days Later on digital on December 18 (that's THIS coming Wednesday!!) and look out for more 28 Years Later updates as they shamble in.
