Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later, hitting theaters on June 20, is easily one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2025, with the first trailer alone close to breaking records, and Empire Magazine has today debuted a terrifyingly intense new look at the so-called emaciated infected from said trailer.
The Alex Garland-penned post-apocalyptic horror is the first in a brand new trilogy, and stars Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connelland Erin Kellyman, with 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy returning to his role as Jim, and also coming onboard as executive producer.
In 28 Years Later:
It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected […] One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.
When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.
The second in the trilogy, Nia DaCosta's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has set a release date of January 16, 2026, with no word yet on the third film. The new trilogy is the first in the series following 2007's 28 Weeks Later.
Despite what many people online seemed to believe, the emaciated infected in question is NOT Murphy as a zombified Jim (you all owe Cillian an apology for sullying his good name and cheekbones, by the way), but a newcomer named Angus Neill.
