It doesn't come as hugely surprising news given the financial success of 28 Years Later and the resoundingly positive first reactions to The Bone Temple (stay tuned for our full review!), but Sony has officially given the third part of Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic horror trilogy the green light.

Per Deadline, who reported the news late last night, franchise writer Alex Garland is currently penning the script to be hopefully directed again by Boyle, with 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy in talks to take center stage.

Hitting theaters on January 16, 2026, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple sees Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta take over the directorial reigns from Boyle. Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams and Jack O'Connell return to star as survivors of the Rage Virus that ravaged Britain almost three decades prior, with Chi Lewis-Parry back as the Alpha Infected Samson, and Erin Kellyman's Jimmy Ink (briefly seen at the end28 Years Later) in a far more substantial role. An official logline reads:

In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike's (Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

No title or plot details yet for 28 Years Later Part 3, and you'll have to wait and see where The Bone Temple takes us before we start making predictions. Stay tuned for all the updates as they roll in.
