Following yesterday's first look images, Sony has unleashed the first trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, set to hit theaters on January 16, 2026.

Nia DaCosta (Candyman) takes the reigns for the follow-up to Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later, with Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams and Jack O'Connell returning to star as survivors of the Rage Virus that ravaged Britain almost three decades prior. Also returning is MMA fighter Chi Lewis-Parry, who plays a behemoth “Alpha” Infected known as Samson, who can be seen in today's first trailer.

An official logline for The Bone Temple, also written by 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later scribe Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), reads:

In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike's (Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy executive produces, and will apparently make a return to his role of bike courier Jim from the original 2002 film.

As well as giving us more insight into the intriguing relationship between Kelson and Samson, today's new trailer also gives us a better look at the psychotic cult of Jimmies, led by O'Connell's Sir Jimmy Crystal, introduced in the bonkers finale of 28 Years Later. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, O'Connell calls this chapter the “weird, deranged cousin” of Boyle's predecessor, which we don't doubt for a second.
