Watching IT: Welcome to Derry – Episode 2: “The Thing in the Dark” Brings Paranoia, Ice Cream, and Pure Nightmare Fuel

What’s up, Losers? As a Happy Halloween surprise HBO is releasing their second episode of IT: Welcome to Derry a few days early to mark the best holiday of the year and your humble Watching IT: Welcome to Derry hosts, Mr. Anthony Breznican and yours truly, are here to discuss all the revelations of this episode, and there are many.

The events of the pilot really did a number on audience expectations and now Episode 2: The Thing in the Dark in the Dark firmly establishes who our main characters truly are and answers the question: what the hell is the Air Force doing in Derry?

This is a very plot-heavy episode, but that doesn’t mean creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti and showrunner Jason Fuchs have forgotten to gross us out. We have two brand new horror set pieces that not only underline Pennywise’s cruelty, they also subtextually tie our two lead kids together as both are tied into the sorrow they feel about a dead parent. You’ll never look at a pickle jar the same way again, I’ll tell ya’ that.

One of the major revelations of this episode is all about the role Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) is playing in the military’s covert super top secret operation in Derry and this is one choice that I am bumping up against. Breznican and I talk through my concerns in the new episode of Watching IT: Welcome to Derry, embedded below. We also find some more fun Stephen King easter eggs, and dive into the symbiotic relationship between the evils of human nature and the evil of the entity that lives in the sewers below.
