To celebrate Godzilla Day, we finally have some news about the sequel to one of the best films ever to feature the King of Monsters. During celebrations at Tokyo’s Godzilla Fest, Toho International revealed the title for the sequel to Godzilla Minus One, the thirtieth film in the kaiju franchise that took the giant-sized monster in an entirely new direction.

In an entirely unsurprising move, the film is to be called Godzilla Minus Zero, which seems like the most natural continuation of the styling set by the Oscar-winning Toho film. What “minus zero” means, though? We’ll just have to find out, but we do know that the sequel is once again in the hands of Takashi Yamazaki, who will write and direct the film, as well as provide visual effects.

This is the first news we’ve gotten about the sequel since it was announced in April of this year, though it’s certainly not the only development we’ve received in the world of Godzilla. Yamazaki also helped to design assets for two different theme park rides featuring the kaiju, including Godzilla the Ride: Great Clash, which features a new look for Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla The Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle, both of which reside at Japan’s Seibuen Amusement Park.

Godzilla Minus One was the first Japanese film to win Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, and the first Godzilla film after Shin Godzilla to be produced in the wake of Toho’s contract with Legendary Entertainment, which produced projects like 2014’s Godzilla and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The 2023 film also won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Screenplay, and the Chainsaw Awards for Best Score and Best Wide Release in 2024.

But Toho isn’t the only one celebrating Godzilla Day in style. If you can’t wait for the new Minus One sequel, Alamo Drafthouse has your Godzilla fix in the form of brand new merch to celebrate the legendary monster’s seventy-first birthday, including a limited edition popcorn bucket, enamel pins, hats, mugs, and more, all available on their website

No release date has been announced for Godzilla Minus Zero. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates as they arrive.
