The King of the Monsters is headed back to theaters next year, it seems. Today happens to be Godzilla Day and the folks at Toho went all out, with tons of merchandise and several big announcements. The biggest announcement of them all was the reveal of Godzilla Minus Zero, which is the official sequel to 2023’s smash hit Godzilla Minus One. Now, we have word that the movie is gearing up for a late 2026 release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero (or Godzilla -0.0) is “locking in a late-2026 global release window.” While no specific date has been confirmed by Toho at this time, that makes a great deal of sense. Production is expected to begin later this year, meaning it should easily be ready to go by then. It will also avoid a direct clash with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is hitting theaters in March 2027

Should current plans hold, this could mirror what happened in 2023 and 2024. Godzilla Minus One first hit theaters in November 2023, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire arriving just a handful of months later in March 2024. Both movies were extremely successful. Minus One made $113 million worldwide on a mere $15 million budget and became the first Godzilla movie ever to win an Oscar. The New Empire became the biggest MonsterVerse movie ever with more than $570 million at the box office. So if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Plot details for Minus Zero remain firmly under wraps. It’s not clear at this time if any other monsters will be involved or if any of the human characters from the first movie will return. What we know for sure is that the sequel will have a bigger budget, with THR also reporting that some filming will take place in New Zealand and Norway. We do have a look at the movie’s logo, which you can check out below. We’ll surely be learning more in the coming weeks/months.

Yamazaki, meanwhile, is a busy man. After Minus One put him on the map, he signed on to make Grandgear for Sony Pictures and Bad Robot. That’s expected to be his English-language debut but, given the way things are shaking out, it will have to wait until at least 2027.

Godzilla Minus Zero doesn’t have a specific release date just yet but stay tuned. For more, check out the list of monsters we’d love to see in the upcoming sequel
