Despite Nia DaCosta's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple being an almost-unanimously praised critical success earlier this year, the box office numbers sadly didn't align with public opinion, casting doubt on whether a third 28 Years Later movie was going ahead at Sony. Thankfully, series helmer Danny Boyle has come forward with an exciting update that seems to confirm that the zombie apocalypse saga will continue.
In an interview with JoBlo's Chris Bumbray, Boyle revealed that 28 Years Later Part 3 (title TBA) which serves as the sequel to both The Bone Temple and the film that started it all, 28 Days Later, is due to enter production early next year:
We ran out of time. Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time… So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple saw Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams and Jack O'Connell return to star as survivors of the Rage Virus that ravaged Britain almost three decades prior. Also written by 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later scribe Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), the pic saw a continuation of the epic story in which Dr. Kelson (Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship with the Alpha Infected Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – while Spike's (Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape:
In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy executive produced the post-apocalyptic sequel, and returned to his role as Jim the bicycle courier, last seen in the game-changing 28 Days Later all the way back in 2002. Jim's appearance left The Bone Temple on a cliffhanger that presumably will see him and Spike team up against the Rage Infected (and perhaps return to the Holy Island) in the third movie.
No further news yet on 28 Years Later Part 3, but rest assured we'll bring you updates as we get them. In the meantime, why not treat yourself to watching Dr. Kelson's incredible performance of ‘Number of the Beast' again.
