He's been on the receiving end of a witch's black magic in Weapons and a zombie onslaught in the upcoming Resident Evil, and now Austin Abrams is stuck inside a whale in the new trailer for Whalefall, hitting theaters on October 16 via 20th Century Studios.

Based on Daniel Kraus' novel of the same name, Whalefall is directed by No One Will Save You‘s Brian Duffield, with Josh Brolin starring alongside Abrams. Described as The Martian meets 127 Hours, Whalefall centers on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains:

The diver gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum are producing Whalefall, with Duffield also producing. 20th Century took Whalefall rights after a competitive bidding war back in 2024.

Released in 2023, Kraus' Whalefall received critical acclaim and was included in a list of the “Best Thrillers of 2023” by the New York Times. Kraus' Angel Down, which won the Pulitzer for Fiction this year, also has a film adaptation in the works from Imagine Entertainment.

Look out for more on Whalefall as we get it.
