Horror and heavy metal have gone hand in hand since the dawn of time (well, since the '80s at least), so any fan of either is going to want to check out Invoking Yell, the festival horror hit from director Patricio Valladares, heading to digital on September 20.
Described as a love letter to black metal, Invoking Yell is set in 1997 south of Chile, and follows:
[…] a trio of metalhead twenty-something girls who venture into the woods to shoot the demo tape for their black metal band, Invoking Yell. However, things take a sinister turn as they document their disturbing and unorthodox process of recording paranormal phenomena to be used in the album’s final track.
Invoking Yell stars María Jesús Marcone, Macarena Carrere and Andrea Ozuljevich as the titular trio, and was written by Valladares and Barry Keating.
Following its premiere at last year's Unnamed Footage Festival, Invoking Yell has been making waves at all the biggest horror festivals, including Popcorn Frights, Chattanooga, Soho Horror Film Festival, Panic Fest and many more.
The new trailer, courtesy of Welcome Villain films, absolutely nails the grimy vibes of the metal scene of the late 90s. In an interview with Moshpit, Valladares detailed just how authentic the shoot was to achieve such an old-school look:
“I'll start by saying that filming the movie was quite a wild ride. We shot the entire film in just three days. We began on a Thursday and wrapped up on Saturday. The crew consisted of only three people plus the actresses. Since it was a documentary-style film, we had a lot of creative freedom when it came to shooting. Now, filming at night in a forest was challenging. Our only source of light was an LED light on the camera, so we had only a few meters of illuminated area. It was complex, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Many scenes were shot behind the cabin where we were staying, though in the film, it looks like we were deep in the mountains. I divided all the nighttime scenes in the film into two days of shooting. I believe we managed to capture some really unsettling moments, where the silence and the sound of the trees rustling in the wind were the main focus”.
And good new for physical media collectors – an Invoking Yell Blu-ray release packed full of special features is set to be released at a later date from Massacre Video.
Look out for Invoking Yell on your digital platform of choice on September 20. Now let's rock out:
