THE BLACK PHONE 2 Has Begun Shooting

Scott Derrickson's supernatural horror sequel hits theaters on October 17, 2025.

Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone 2 has officially begun shooting today, according to the Sinister and Doctor Strange director himself.

Plot details for the sequel to The Black Phone, based on the story by Joe Hill, are still under wraps, but we do know that stars Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames are set to return, as is The Black Phone screenwriter C. Robert Cargill. Jason Blum will also return as producer via Blumhouse.

Pulling in over $160 million on a budget of under $20 million, The Black Phone was a box office hit upon release in 2022. The film followed a 13-year old boy abducted by a child killer known as The Grabber in a suburban neighborhood and locked in a soundproof basement, who then begins to receive calls on a disconnected phone from the killer’s previous victims.

A sequel was greenlit shortly after release, and is currently set to hit theaters on October 17, 2025. Dreamkill, Derrickson's entry into the 2023 found footage anthology movieV/H/S/85, was set in the world of The Black Phone.

Now – spoilers follow – many might be wondering how exactly Hawke is going to return as The Grabber, given that he met a pretty grisly end in the first movie. However, given the supernatural elements to the story, it's certainly not impossible. In a previous interview, Derrickson detailed how it was Hill himself who pitched him “a wonderful idea” for the sequel, so you just know the story is in good hands.
