Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer, One Missed Call) is executive director on Nyaight of the Living Cat, a killer cat anime that has had its first trailer from Crunchyroll released earlier today.
Based on a cult comedy-horror manga series of the same name written by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha-Roots, Nyaight of the Living Cat is produced by OLM, the studio behind Pokémon, and will air on anime streaming service Crunchyroll in 2025.
Also directing are Tomohiro Kamitani (Beyond the Sky) and written by Shingo Irie (Afterlost: Where I End and You Begin), with character designs by Takao Maki (Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls).
In Nyaight of the Living Cat:
Run! The Adorable Cats Are Here In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world? The momentously catful comic is getting a TV anime in 2025!
The ever-eccentric Miike teases more on the show:
“It’s terrifying, but the Nyandemic can no longer be stopped […] The time has come for humanity to dedicate both body and soul to cats. Resistance is futile. Accept it, sit back, watch in silence, let those little paws knead you, and find happiness. Every single staff member involved, including all the voice actors, in this project have turned into cats. Next, it’s your turn to become a cat. This laugh-out-loud, panic-inducing anime was born to bring happiness to everyone on Earth. I hope you enjoy it.”
Given Miike's penchant for guts and gore, it's safe to say we can expect some gloriously graphic scenes from these killer kitties.
Kamitani adds:
“Under the guidance of chief director Miike, I’ve been participating as the director of the production. This project, including the opportunity to work with Director Miike, has given me experiences I couldn’t have anywhere else, and I’ve been having a lot of fun.
Not only the main staff but also members from every department are cat lovers. People joined the team because they wanted to work on something cat-related or because they loved cats, leading to a mysterious improvement in quality. It feels like this project is packed with everyone’s love for cats. Cats are amazing, aren’t they? I think this anime is something quite unique, unlike anything else, so I hope you’ll enjoy those aspects as well,”
