The monster renaissance continues with today's news coming in from The Hollywood Reporter that Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground, Evil Dead Rise) is set to write and direct a new take on The Mummy for Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster.
Previously kept well under wraps (heh), The Mummy has also been dated for an April 17, 2026 release. Cronin's Doppelgängers banner will also produce.
In a statement, Cronin teased a little of what we can expect from his upcoming monster movie:
“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before […] I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”
Cronin also shared a sneak peek of the script via his own social media (seen below).
Need we remind you that Cronin's Evil Dead Rise was a huge hit back in 2023, nabbing almost $150 million at the global box office and kickstarting the Evil Dead franchise once again.
The Mummy will be the latest in a new batch of iconic monster movies returning from the grave in the modern era, joining Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and James Wan's The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The mummy has had several iconic cinematic outings, including 1932's The Mummy with the iconic Boris Karloff in the lead, 1959's The Mummy from Hammer starring the legendary Christopher Lee, and of course the 1999 action-adventure classic The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. More recent attempts, 2017's The Mummy starring Tom Cruise for one, have been less than successful, but if anyone can breathe new life into the terrifying creature, it's Cronin.
Needless to say we'll be following The Mummy very closely – stay tuned for updates.
