Currently sweeping the box office with rave reviews from critics and fans, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu sent 2024 out on a high note, with horror lovers
Starring Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying Count Orlok, Eggers' take on the 1922 F.W. Murnau classic has been a long time in the making. The Witch director first saw the iconic silent horror when he was nine years old, and went on to create a stage play which would ultimately serve as the roots of his feature version of Nosferatu.
In Nosferatu, Depp stars as Ellen Hutter, a young woman who becomes the object of desire for the terrifying and very much undead vampire, Count Orlok (Skarsgård).
In a new interview with Esquire UK, Eggers, Dafoe and Skarsgård revealed more of the production process, their experience with the characters and, excitingly, Eggers teased an extended cut of the film coming to Blu-ray, presumably later this year.
Referring to the shot in the trailer (seen above) where Skarsgård's Orlok is silhouetted from behind, Eggers reveals the reason it's not in the movie, but that it will be soon:
“The first shot is a funny one because it's one of those annoying things for film dorks because it's not in the movie. It's a really cool shot, we really like the shot but where it was intended it was actually ruining some tension to know that Bill was around when we needed to keep him more mysterious. But if you wish to purchase the Blu-ray, it is in the extended version of the film.”
So, there you have it folks. Not only are we getting more of Eggers' vision, we'll also finally be able to see that trailer shot in its full glory. Currently sitting at a hefty 132 minutes, it's entirely possible that the addition of extra scenes could take the film to over 3 hours, but we're certainly not complaining if it means more of Skarsgård's jaw-dropping transformation into the ancient bloodsucker.
