THE TOXIC AVENGER Sets Summer Release Date

Macon Blair's reimagining of the 1984 Troma cult classic originally premiered at Fantastic Fest two years ago.

Two years since premiering at Fantastic Fest, Cineverse has finally set a date for Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger, with the unrated reboot hitting theaters on August 29 of this year.

Starring Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis and Taylour Paige, Blair's reimagining of the 1984 Troma cult classic follows a downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage), who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie.

“Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son. The story channels the subversive gonzo energy of the original Toxic Avenger while delivering a fresh, contemporary twist,”

Deadline notes that the release is down to a change in the calendar, which could be related to the pushback of Insidious 6, originally slated to go wide that weekend, being moved back to 2026.

Following its Fantastic Fest premiere in 2023, Fango's own Angel Melanson described Blair's The Toxic Avenger as follows:

Fans of the original have irreverent humor, clever kills, and copious amounts of gore to look forward to. If you imagine The Toxic Avengerwith a bigger budget, Macon essentially nails it, staying true to the tone and humor with an impressive cast clearly up to the task, and a killer finale.
