The Super Bowl Couldn’t Kill HEART EYES At The Box Office

Despite the big game, Josh Ruben’s new slasher did respectable business.

Super Bowl weekend is, historically speaking, one of the smallest moviegoing weekends of the entire year. As most of the U.S. is focused on the big game, in this case watching the Eagles steamroll the Chiefs. Only a relatively small number of people are headed out to a theater. As a result, Hollywood typically doesn’t unleash its A-game during this frame. Sony Pictures did give it a go with its new slasher Heart Eyes, while Universal Pictures dropped its action/comedy Love Hurts. One was a relative success. The other? Not so much.

As DreamWorks animated Dog Man topped the charts for a second weekend in a row with a paltry $13.7 million domestically, Heart Eyes managed to finish in second place with a respectable $8.5 million. Directed by Josh Ruben, of Werewolves Within fame, the slasher/rom-com mash-up was produced for $18 million. So, on the one hand, it needs to hold well in the coming weeks and do some business overseas to break even. For now though, it’s a decent start.

Love Eyes, meanwhile, stars Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan and had to settle for third place with just $5.8 million. Reviews for the film were pretty mixed, which certainly didn’t help. On the flip side Heart Eyes was met with a rather warm response from critics, which brought out the horror faithful. Because it has the romance angle, it has a chance to hang on next weekend even as Captain America: Brave New World and Paddington in Peru enter the fold.

In Heart Eyes, for the past several years, the so-called “Heart Eyes Killer” has wreaked havoc on Valentine’s Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples. A budding will they/won’t they romance between Ally and Jay is interrupted by the determined killer. Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream), lead the cast with Devon Sawa (Chucky), Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious) and Michaela Watkins (The Dropout) also starring.

Unfortunately, Warner Bros.’ acclaimed sci-fi/horror flick Companion suffered a brutal drop in its second weekend. Despite posted a solid $.95 million opening to help round out January and kick off February, director Drew Hancock’s directorial debut dropped nearly 68% in its second weekend with a $3 million haul. It’s probably going to shed screens like crazy before next weekend and will be packing it in shortly after. Still, the film cost just $10 million to produce and has pulled in $26.7 million worldwide, so it will be fine in the end. It’s just not going to be the breakout hit it could have been.

Looking ahead, this upcoming weekend will see Marvel’s latest Captain America movie deliver the year’s first true blockbuster, as Paddington in Peru looks to serve as counter programming for the family crowd. Heart Eyes will still be the prime option for horror fans. However, Oz Perkins’ much-anticipated The Monkey arrives the following weekend, which has breakout hit written all over it. Here’s hoping.
