Heads up, Five Nights at Freddy’s fans! During the PlayStation State of Play presentation, it was confirmed that a new game in the beloved franchise is coming our way this summer. While it’s still very mysterious, we now have a first look at some gameplay as well as a release date for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secrets of the Mimic. Check it out.
First and foremost, the game is due to arrive on June 13. Plan accordingly. Aside from that, this looks like a robust return to form for the series. It certainly seems more robust than last year’s 2D adventure Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit. Not that such a game doesn’t have its place, but this looks like a narrative-driven, scary adventure that will further the surprisingly rich lore of this series. To that end, the creepy voiceover in the trailer provides some hints about what we can expect.
“Let me explain the situation. One of our contractors, Edwin Murray, has gone missing, leaving our property abandoned in his warehouse. Your job is simple: Enter the warehouse and retrieve the technology that he was developing for us. It’s a kind of prototype exoskeleton that can adapt to any costume, and become any character.
We suspect it may be malfunctioning, so just be aware of the slim but non-zero chance that you could sustain significant injuries while attempting to retrieve it, including but not limited to death and dismemberment. We fully expect the retrieval process to go smoothly and without incident. But, just in case, we suggest you get your affairs in order before arriving.”
So it sounds like this exoskeleton is going to present players with the challenge of facing something that can take the form of any costume, which could mean lots of characters from the past will show up. There’s also the intriguing tagline that was revealed when the game was first announced which reads, “To see the future sometimes you need to understand the past.” So, does this game take place in the past? Or is it merely revisiting elements of the past? We shall see!
It figures to be a big year for the franchise overall. Aside from the game, we also have the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movie due to hit theaters in December. The first live-action adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s beloved creation broke records, becoming one of the biggest horror movies in recent memory. Having a new game hit shelves just months ahead of the film feels like a no brainer.
Look for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secrets of the Mimic on June 13. For more, get the lowdown on the big character reveal in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 poster.
