THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Warping Onto 4K Remaster For 50th Anniversary

The 10-month remaster project was overseen by Walt Disney Restoration and will be released in theaters and on Blu-ray later this year.

The iconic cult classic musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show celebrates 50 years of time warping this year, and is getting a new 4K Ultra remaster and logo to celebrate.

Per Variety, the 10-month remaster project was overseen by Walt Disney Restoration and will be released in theaters and on Blu-ray later this year.

Based on the play by Richard O’Brien, with a screenplay by O’Brien and director Jim Sharman, the 1975 movie of The Rocky Horror Picture Show stars Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon and the legendary Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The pic follows a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, occupied by all manner of weird and wonderful strangers in elaborate costumes holding a party.

The film – which quickly became an interactive live sensation that still draws huge crowds to this day – was produced by Lou Adler and Michael White.

Restoration & Library Management director Kevin Schaeffer had this to say of the recent Rocky Horror restoration:

“It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many […] Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”

Producer Adler adds:

“When ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ was first released, no one thought it would be around very long, let alone…50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”

Watch out for updates on the upcoming Rocky Horror Picture Show restoration as they dance in.
