10 Of The Best Upcoming 4K And Blu-Ray Horror Releases

French extremity, Japanese ghost stories and classic British sci-fi make up the best of June.

It's officially summer, which means the calendar for new theatrical releases is pretty stacked, but for those days when you want to keep the movie watching at home, June also brings a bunch of fantastic physical media releases to enjoy from the comfort of your couch.

  • Arbor Day (4K UHD/Blu-ray) - Terror Vision

Following its premiere back in 1990, comedy slasher Arbor Day seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth – until the good folks at Terror Vision unearthed it with a brand new 4K HDR release. Directed by Joseph Sikorski, the film follows the rampage of killer Elmer Jacobs, who uses a selection of gardening tools to pick off his victims. While Terror Vision's 3-disc Limited Edition is sadly sold out, you can still grab the Standard Edition with slipcover, which is still well worth adding to your collection due to the film's notoriety.

Pre-order Arbor Day here for a late June release.

  • Drop (Collector's Edition 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital) - Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

Christopher Landon's twisty tech-thriller (which the Freaky director has described as both an ode to Wes Craven and Brian De Palma) stars Meghann Fahy as a widowed mother dipping her toes back into the dating pool with her first date in years, only to have the evening interrupted by a series of anonymous drops sent to her phone. Bonus features on the Collector's Edition include commentary with Landon, a Making Of featurette and more.

Pre-order Drop here for a June 10 release.

  • I Know What You Did Last Summer (UHD Combo + Digital + SteelBook) - Sony

With Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer right around the corner, Sony is giving the OG film the Collector's Edition treatment with a brand new SteelBook release. Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, the 1997 slasher stands alongside Scream as one of the essentials of the era. This release includes deleted scenes, a music video and more.

Pre-order I Know What You Did Last Summer here for a June 24 release.

  • Jaws (50th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital) - Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

If you can't make it to any of the in-person (and some in-water) celebrations, there's no better way than to honor 50 years of the daddy of all shark movies by snapping up Universal Pictures' brand new anniversary release of Jaws. The new release comes with all-new artwork and over five hours of extras, including Laurent Bouzereau's new documentary, Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, from National Geographic in partnership with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Documentaries, Nedland Media, and Wendy Benchley.

Pre-order Jaws right here on your preferred format for a June 17 release.

  • Monkey Shines (Collector's Edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray) - Shout! Factory

Osgood Perkins' The Monkey might have put toy monkeys back on the horror map this year, but don't forget which cover art made them creepy in the first place. George A. Romero's Monkey Shines stands as one of the best “mad monkey” movies out there (a subgenre that should be bigger, frankly), and Shout!'s release honors the 1988 horror with a new 4K restoration from the original negative, a new commentary from THE KINGCAST's Eric Vespe and author Daniel Kraus, deleted scenes and much more.

Pre-order Monkey Shines here for a June 3 release.

  • Talk to Me (Limited Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray) - Second Sight Films

With the Philippou brothers' latest nightmare Bring Her Back newly released, there's no better time to remind yourself of the movie that made them by checking out Second Sight Films' stacked release of Talk to Me. The Limited Edition set comes with commentary and new interview with Danny and Michael Philippou, as well as new essays, deleted scenes and more. Sadly, a cursed embalmed hand that lets you commune with the dead isn't included (probably for the best, eh?)

Pre-order Talk to Me here for a June 23 release.

  • The Snow Woman (Blu-ray) - Radiance Films

If you missed out on Radiance Films' now sold out beautiful Daiei Gothic boxset, fear not – you can still grab the individual films in the set, with one of the best being Tokuzō Tanaka's 1968 fantasy horror The Snow Woman. Based on the Japanese folk tale of the “yuki-onna” snow spirit, The Snow Woman is a classic Gothic ghost story with an eerie score from Godzilla‘s Akira Ifukube. Radiance Films' release comes with a visual essay, an appreciation from Japanese horror filmmaker Masayuki Ochiai (Infection) and more.

Pre-order The Snow Woman here for a June 23 release.

  • The Quatermass Xperiment (Limited Collector's Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray) - Hammer

As part of the iconic British studios recent resurrection, Hammer is releasing some of their most classic sci-fi and horror features onto 4K UHD for the first time, starting with 1955's The Quatermass Xperiment. Created by Nigel Kneale and directed by the great Val Guest, The Quatermass Xperiment is a film adaptation of the 1953 BBC television series, and follows three astronauts who have been launched into space aboard rocket designed by the esteemed Professor Quatermass. Hammer's Limited Collector's Edition comes with an 180-page booklet and 56-page comic, new and archive commentaries, interviews, documentaries, Making Of featurettes, three iterations of the film and much more (seriously, this thing is packed.)

Pre-order  The Quatermass Xperiment here for a June 9 release.

  • The Dead Zone (Amazon Exclusive SteelBook 4K UHD + Blu-ray) - Shout! Factory

David Cronenberg's Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone stars Christopher Walken as a schoolteacher who awakens from a coma to find he has psychic powers, and is considered one of the best King adaptations – very high praise for a subgenre that already includes masterpieces like Kubrick's The Shining and De Palma's Carrie. Shout!'s Amazon exclusive release includes an audio commentary from THE KINGCAST's Eric Vespe and the late, great Scott Wampler, alongside frequent King adapter Mike Flanagan, audio commentary from Michael Gingold, Masters of Horror‘s Mick Garris on The Dead Zone and much more.

Pre-order The Dead Zone here for a June 10 release.

If you like your horror bleak and bloody, you're probably fully familiar with New French Extremity, but if you're looking to dip your toes in, Umbrella Entertainment's New Extremity Boxset is the perfect way to start. The collection boasts some of the most brutal films in the subgenre, with Alexandre Aja's Haute Tension, Catherine Briellat's Anatomy of Hell, Xavier Gens Frontier(s) and Pascal Laugier's Martyrs all coming with brand new commentaries, written and video essays, interviews posters and much more.
