RESIDENT EVIL 2’s Hideki Kamiya Would “Love To” Reboot DINO CRISIS

Capcom's Dino Crisis has been in statis for more than two decades, with the last entry in coming in 2003 with Dino Crisis 3. With the massive success of Capcom's Resident Evil remake series, surely now is the time to bring the survival horror gaming series back to life – could Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya be the man to do it?

Released back in 1999, the first Dino Crisis game sold over 2.4 million copies, and was generally well-received by critics and gamers alike. Whisperings of a reboot have been in circulation for many years, and in 2014 there were rumors that Capcom had a Dino Crisis 4 in the works. Nothing ever came of this, evidently, but fans haven't given up hope – Dino Crisis 1 and 2 were recently added to GOG's Game Preservation Series so they can be enjoyed on modern consoles, and the game also topped a Capcom poll where fans could vote for a particular series that they “would like to see get a sequel or new game.”

For those who haven't played, a description of the first game in the series reads as follows:

“You play as Regina, a member of a four-person team sent to retrieve an expatriate scientist. Your radio man became a midnight snack for the T.rex, so it's up to you and your two remaining teammates to explore a dino-infested research station, rescue the scientist, call for a helicopter retrieval, and escape with your lives. Along the way you'll uncover the grizzly remains of those who got in the dinosaurs' way, and you'll unravel the mystery of how a top-secret energy research project turned into a Jurassic nightmare.”

Kamiya's Resident Evil 2, released in 1998, was also a gargantuan success, and stands as the best-selling Resident Evil game for a single platform – a Kamiya-helmed Dino Crisis reboot could do extremely well, if all went to plan. In a new interview with MinnMax, when asked if he'd like to direct a new Dino Crisis game, Kamiya replies “I'd love to give it a shot.” (he also says he doesn't want to direct a new Resident Evil game, which is a shame, but hey, win some lose some!)

However, don't start planning those Dino Crisis play parties just yet – back in 2024, creator Shinji Mikami cast doubt on a new version of the game, saying “I don't really feel like there's a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now,” due to to the success of Capcom's Monster Hunter.
