Following a premiere at Cannes earlier this year (where it reportedly received an eight-minute standing ovation from a sold-out crowd of 2,300 viewers), Toho has unveiled a new look at Exit 8, the upcoming live action adaptation of The Exit 8, a liminal walking simulator from Kotake Create.
Written and directed by Genki Kawamura (producer on Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster and Makoto Shinkai's Your Name), Exit 8 has been described as a “labyrinthine horror”, with undertones of Alice in Wonderland and Squid Game. Kazunari Ninomiya (Gantz) and Nana Komatsu (The World of Kanako) star.
Released back in 2023, The Exit 8 sees the player walking through a Japanese metro station passageway, trying to spot inaccuracies to reach the exit of the station. Rather than relying on jumpscares, players must keep their wits about them in the face of unravelling psychological oddities.
The Exit 8 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam, and the film Exit 8 will be released in Japanese theaters on August 29, 2025. No news yet on an international release, but we'll keep you posted. Check out the new trailer below (which is in Japanese but can be understood with translated subs!):
