It's been a long time coming, but filming is officially finally underway on A24's Crystal Lake, with showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (the upcoming It: Welcome to Derry) revealing on Instagram that the series is filming under the hilariously apt fake title of Mama's Boy.
While we still don't know who is playing the masked maniac Jason Voorhees, Crystal Lake‘s cast so far includes Linda Cardellini as Jason's mother Pamela, William Catlett, as a character named Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, and Cameron Scoggins in a legacy role as Officer Dorf.
Specifics regarding the plot remain totally under wraps but we do know that Crystal Lake will flesh out the story of Cardellini's Mrs. Voorhees, a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child, and takes a dark turn when she loses her son.
The eight-episode series, which does not yet have a release date, has episodes directed by Michael Lennox (Derry Girls), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (The Pitt). According to Kane's slate, Lennox seems to be handling Episode 1, with Maceo Bishop (Uncut Gems, The Curse) handling cinematography.
Despite a troubled history, what with losing original showrunner Bryan Fuller, directors Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Kimberly Peirce (Carrie) and Scream‘s Kevin Williamson (not to mention potentially Charlize Theron in the Mrs. Voorhees role) it's hugely exciting to see Crystal Lake finally beginning to take shape, bringing Jason to life again for the first time since 2009's Friday the 13th.
Crystal Lake does not currently have a release date but stay tuned. For more, get the lowdown on what else the Friday the 13th franchise might have in store.
