There’s few places more unsettling than the desert. Hardly anything ever survives out there, and if you end up stuck out there…well, good luck. Dark Sky Films seems to understand that, with the trailer for their latest film, aptly titled A Desert, which is expanding into new markets this weekend.
Directed by Joshua Erkman, A Desert sees “a past his prime photographer head out on a road trip across the American Southwest to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into this nightmare world with him.” The film stars David Yow, Kai Lennox, Sarah Lind, Zachary Ray Sherman, Ashley B. Smith, Rob Zabrecky, and S.A Griffin, and is produced by Erkman, Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms, and Joe Yanick.
The trailer focuses less on the film’s protagonist and more on those he sets out to photograph, who clearly have something sinister in mind. Despite the protective shield of his camera, it’s inevitable that he’s going to get dragged into tragedy sooner or later, especially in a desolate place where no one’s likely to find him.
A Desert is Erkman’s feature directorial debut, after having directed numerous music videos, as well as partnering with the Sundance Institute and Hulu in 2019 for their Huluween project, in which his short film Hidden Mother was featured. His project The Arsonists was also selected to participate in the 2021 Frontieres genre market, organized by the Fantasia International Film Festival.
A Desert is expanding into over forty theaters this weekend, including in cities like Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and New York, and tickets are available now. Check out the trailer below:
