Here’s A New Look At A24’s Popstar Cult Horror OPUS

Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich star in Mark Anthony Green's feature debut.

Among the many horrors we're excited for in 2025, A24's Opus is pretty high on the list, with a new still from USA Today only piquing our interest further.

Starring Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets) and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich, Billions), Opus is the debut feature of writer-director Mark Anthony Green, and will release nationwide on March 14 after its Sundance premiere.

Described as “a disturbing game of cat and mouse“, in Opus:

The horror film centers on an ambitious young writer (Edebiri) invited to the isolated compound of an iconic pop star (Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared and hasn't been seen in three decades. There she discovers, surrounded by the musician's cult of followers, the twisted machinations behind his grand return.

Edebiri plays the “meek yet hungry journalist Ariel — her unique charm radiating alongside a distinct final-girl prescience”, while Malkovich is “effervescent and hypnotic as Moretti, a deified global phenomenon making a dramatically malevolent reintroduction.”

According to Sundance, Opus also boasts musical numbers, seemingly carrying on 2024's popstar horror trend after Parker Finn's Smile 2 and M. Night Shyamalan's Trap.
