A24’s THE BACKROOMS Enters Production This Summer, Chiwetel Ejiofor To Star

James Wan's Atomic Monster will executive produce the feature debut from teen filmmaker Kane Parsons.

This summer, A24 is officially entering production on The Backrooms, with Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Life of Chuck) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World, A Different Man) set to star (as opposed to previously rumored star Cristin Milioti).

Based on the viral series of found-footage videos from teen filmmaker and VFX artist Kane Parsons, which are themselves based on a 4chan creepypastaThe Backrooms follows a young filmmaker’s fall into another dimension leaves him wandering through an unsettlingly yellow, empty and labyrinthine office space, which may or may not be home to otherworldly beings. The first video in the series, titled “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” racked up 66million views since its release three years ago.

Parsons will direct from a script by Roberto Patino (Westworld, DMZ), with Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine producing for 21 Laps. Horror master James Wan and Michael Clear are executive producing for Atomic Monster.

At just 19, Parsons is officially the youngest director in A24 history.

No release date has been set yet for The Backrooms, but we'll bring you all the updates as they creep in.
