Riverdale fans who didn’t think the series went far enough into the weird and impossible just got great news: Deadline reports that Disney+ has ordered a series adaptation of Afterlife With Archie, a new hour-long drama based on the comic series of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, which reimagines the town of Riverdale as a post-apocalyptic world filled with flesh-eating zombies. Because of course.
Aguirre-Sacasa will write and executive produce the series, having served as showrunner for Riverdale, and will be accompanied by Greg Berlanti and his production company. Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman will also executive produce for Berlanti Productions, with Jon Goldwater executive producing for Archie Comics Studios.
“The rumors are true. We are ALL over the (blood red) moon to be working on a television adaption of “Afterlife with Archie” for @disneyplus,” Aguirre-Sacasa wrote in an Instagram post celebrating the show’s announcement. “Beyond grateful to the team there…But just as exciting (and in some ways, even MORE exciting), the incomparable @f_francavilla and I are resurrecting the OG comic book that truly started it all!!! Issues 11 and 12 have been written, I’m plotting 13 even as we speak, and Francesco’s already drawing!!! And every issue will be plus-sized and loaded with tons of bonus content! We’re beyond committed to making these next three issues worth the (extremely) long wait!”
Aguirre-Sacasa was also responsible for the comic series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a fellow Archie Comics title which was also adapted for television, running on Netflix for four seasons, so it’s no surprise that he’s once again joined the Archie team for another go around. No casting for the series has been announced, but we can imagine there won’t be any crossover from Riverdale. (Or maybe…?)
