Sci-fi comedy thriller series Murderbot heads to Apple TV+ on May 16, with the streamer releasing a first-look images of star Alexander Skarsgård (Infinity Pool, The Northman) in action as the titular android.
Based on Martha Wells' bestselling books The Murderbot Diaries, the series follows a genderless cyborg known as SecUnit who has managed to free itself from the shackles of a futuristic megacorporation.
“Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.”
Chris and Paul Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy) created, wrote and directed the show, with Wells serving as executive producer alongside Andrew Miano for Depth of Field, David S. Goyer and Keith Levine for Phantom Four.
Starring alongside Skarsgård are Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski.
The Murderbot Diaries consists of seven books with the first, All Systems Red, releasing in 2017 and the latest, System Collapse released back in 2023. In a previous interview, Wells expressed how “excited” she was for the upcoming series.
The first two of ten episodes of Murderbot premiere on Apple TV+ on May 16, with new episodes to follow on Fridays.
