Alien: Romulus has been a huge hit for Disney thus far. It’s coming up on $350 million at the global box office, making it the second-biggest movie in the series behind only Prometheus ($403 million worldwide). Against an $80 million budget, it will be hugely profitable. That means the franchise is very likely to continue. Alvarez has said that he already has ideas for a sequel, should Disney wish to continue down this particular avenue.
The film centers on a group of young space colonizers who are scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station where they come face-to-face with the most relentless and deadly life form in the universe. The cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Alvarez penned the screenplay with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues Ridley Scott — who directed the original Alien — produced the film with Michael Pruss and Walter Hill.
