We’re in the midst of January, which is always pretty slow at the box office but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to celebrate. To that end, Sony’s very meta Anaconda reboot starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd passed a major milestone over the weekend.

Directed by Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), the new Anaconda added an estimated $5.1 million domestically on its third weekend of release, landing at number seven on the charts. Paramount's killer chimp movie Primate opened to $11.3 million at number two, with Avatar: Fire and Ash ($21.3 million) repeating at number one for the fourth time. Sony’s reboot also added $7.7 million overseas over the weekend. It’s now made $54.2 million domestically to go with $55.8 million internationally for a running total of $110 million.

The reboot of the beloved 1997 creature feature of the same name centers on Doug (Black) and Griff (Rudd), who have been best friends since they were kids. They’ve always dreamed of remaking their favorite movie, which is of course Anaconda. A midlife crisis leads them to finally do it but as they head into the Amazon to start filming, an actual giant snake appears. Steve Zahn (Joy Ride), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) and Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) also star.

Anaconda has been eating well since Christmas, despite stiff competition. That competition includes Lionsgate’s erotic thriller The Housemaid, which added another $11.2 million over the weekend and is coming up on $200 million worldwide, we might add. No wonder the studio is already working on a sequel

Speaking of sequels, Gormican’s giant snake flick carries a reported $45 million production budget. At the rate things are going, this one is absolutely going to make money for Sony. While critics were mixed on Anaconda, audiences are largely eating it up. Not to get into spoilers, but it absolutely sets up a sequel. The question becomes, at what point does Sony decide it’s enough to actually pursue that sequel? We’re not there quite yet, but we’re certainly getting there.

Looking ahead, competition in the horror space gets fierce as January rolls on. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opens this upcoming weekend, with Return to Silent Hill and Send Help also arriving before month’s end. Whether or not that results in a traffic jam where there isn’t enough room for everyone to succeed remains to be seen.
