If you haven’t gotten a chance to catch Samara Weaving’s latest outing as a (not so) scream queen in Azrael, then you’ll have your chance soon. The survival thriller hits Blu-ray on January 21, courtesy of IFC Films, bringing the religious horror film to physical media fanatics everywhere.
The E.L. Katz-directed film comes with several bonus features and all-new cover art, featuring Weaving brandishing a blade against the fires of hell. The special features are as follows:
- Audio Commentary with Director E.L. Katz, Writer-Producer Simon Barrett, and Producer Dan Kagan
- Set Design Gallery
- Concept Art Gallery by Simon Laszlo
- Church Fight Featurette: Pre-Visual vs Final Cut
- Make-up Special FX by Dan Martin
- Behind the Set Clips: Church After Dark, Tent Village
Azrael puts a unique twist on the survival thriller to amp up the stakes, in a world where words are considered to be sinful, no one speaks in order to remain clean in a ruined world. Yes, you heard me right — not a single word is spoken over the course of the film, leaving everything up the audience’s interpretation as it lets actions speak louder than words while Azrael tries her hardest to escape those who want her dead. (Unless you count screaming, but that’s always a given for horror anyway, dialogue or no.)
The film comes from the mind of Simon Barrett, who horror fans might recognize as the writer of The Guest and multiple segments in the popular V/H/S franchise on Shudder. E.L. Katz directs the film, which was shot in Estonia in 2022, and co-stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Vic Carmen Sonne as two other nameless acolytes. It’s one of IFC Films and Shudder’s many highly-anticipated horror releases for the year, which also includes In a Violent Nature and Late Night With the Devil, among others.
Azrael is currently streaming on Shudder, with the Blu-ray available for pre-order now. Check out the new cover art below:
