André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Last Voyage of the Demeter) is set to direct a movie adaptation of the indie horror puzzle game, Bendy and the Ink Machine.

Released in 2017 from developer Joey Drew Stories, Bendy and the Ink Machine follows Henry Stein, a retired animator who receives a letter inviting him back to his old workplace. There, Stein discovers a series of strange paranormal activities caused by the titular Ink Machine. Moving through five distinct chapters, players need to solve puzzles, collect objects or audio logs, and fight enemies in order to progress and discover the secrets of Bendy the Dancing Demon. The game was followed by two more games, 2022's Bendy and the Dark Revival and 2024's Bendy: Secrets of the Machine.

A film adaptation of Bendy and the Ink Machine was announced back in December 2023, with Radar Pictures set to produce.

Announcing the news via the official Bendy X/Twitter account earlier today, Øvredal detailed his excitement on adapting the game for the big screen:

“I promise we're going to make a really special movie, something that all the fans are going to love. Something that honours the fantastic characters, fun worlds, and everything we all love about the Bendy games.”

Earlier this year, Bendy creator TheMeatly Games shared on X/Twitter that the upcoming movie would have a mix of CGI and practical effects, something we know Øvredal excels at.

Whether or not Øvredal's Bendy and the Ink Machine will come before or after his as-of-now untitled horror movie (penned by The Den‘s Zachary Donohue) for Paramount remains to be seen.

As the director of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Øvredal has more than proved himself as capable of serving up a scary take on YA horror – but don't let Bendy's cute, cartoon appearance fool you. The game goes to some very dark places, and we're sure the movie will too.
