The biggest news among the best horror movies on Netflix isn't a movie at all; it is the long-awaited and grand finale of the Netflix series Stranger Things. It has been a long three years that fans have been waiting for the next and final season. It's bittersweet, but it will surely give those who love the show closure. Netflix also has the sequel to the hit film Troll. Strangely, it's also been three years since the first film was released, but more giant angry troll action is on the way, too.

Since winter and the final holidays of the year are soon to approach, it's always good to have an eerie historical epic about Vikings to keep you glued to the screen. Fortunately, the streamer has also chosen Robert Eggers' most mainstream yet scary film, The Northmanto give you the creeps, with supernatural elements at its core and an actual volcano to make your living room toasty warm.

There's also Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches, season two, which will catch you up on the series since the end of season one. There's a lot to catch up on, even though there are only eight episodes. But once you have watched them all, you will be ready for season three.

  • Brightburn

Written by Brian and Mark Gunn and produced by James Gunn, Brightburn is an examination of the concept of Superman, but only if the extraterrestrial adoptee on Earth, Brandon Breyer, uses his powers for evil, rather than good. Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner star in the film in which what looks like a young boy has superpowers and abilities, but has destruction in mind, even though he appears to be innocent.

Directed by David Yarovesky, this film creates a horror superhero or supervillain, depending on how you look at it.

  • Godzilla (1998)

Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Kevin Dunn, Michael Lerner, and Harry Shearer star in this reboot of the Toho Studios Godzilla films, directed by Roland Emmerich. It was the first Godzilla to ever be produced by a film studio based in the United States, in this case, TriStar Pictures.

Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos is on the trail of an unknown creature, spawned from nuclear radiation, that has wreaked havoc in Jamaica and the Atlantic Ocean and seems to be heading towards the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. When the creature reaches New York City, Tatopoulos discovers that it can reproduce asexually and may have laid eggs, which could destroy human civilization.

  • Hollow Man

Hollow Man was directed by Paul Verhoeven, and it is a stylish and bloody horror film about a narcissistic genius who is obsessed with creating a serum that gives the person who takes it to power of invisibility. Elisabeth Shue, Kevin Bacon, Josh Brolin, Kim Dickens, Greg Grunberg, Joey Slotnick, Mary Randle, and William Devane star in the film, which has echoes of The Invisible Man, as Kevin Bacon's brilliant, yet unstable character, Sebastian Caine, seems to be driven into insanity by the power being invisible gives him.

Verhoeven said that the film invites the audience to go along with Caine's perspective as he goes from being provocative to committing crimes to see how long the audience can tolerate his growing evil. The director was surprised that the U.S. government allowed the production to film at the Pentagon, one of the few movies that has, given the film's subject matter.

  • Troll 2

In the sequel to the 2022 monster movie, Troll, a new troll has been awakened, and the heroes from the first film, Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris, join together to defeat this dangerous threat with a friendly troll on their side. Directed again by Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, the film stars Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, Gard B. Eidsvold, Aksel Almaas, and Trond Magnum.

These films are both based on Norwegian folklore, and the second film has surprises in store for viewers, as secrets are revealed and misunderstood purposes are finally unearthed as the new team works together to save Norway.

Alexandra Daddario, Harry Hamlin, Tongayi Chirisa, and Jack Huston star as members of the Mayfair family, agents of the Talamasca, and Lasher, a powerful entity bound to the family.

As Rowan Fielding tries to deal with the dangers of Lasher, the Talamasca and the Scottish arm of the Mayfair family have plans of their own for Lasher and the children of the Taltos.

  • The Northman on December 3

Robert Eggers' third film is a historical epic about a Viking prince who seeks vengeance on the man who murdered his father. The film has the exacting period detail that Eggers' productions always have, and is based on the story of Prince Amleth, who is the direct inspiration for Shakespeare's Hamlet. The film has a supernatural aspect with a seeress, a he-witch, and the undead guard of the Draugr sword, whom Amleth must overcome in a scary battle.

The film is thrilling and one of the darkest imaginings of the Amleth/Hamlet story. The Viking myths of the Valkyries and witchcraft are a big part of the story. Also, two men fight naked with swords next to a volcano erupting, which you have to admit is immensely entertaining. It is Eggers' most crowdpleasing film and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.

  • Castle Rock (Seasons 1-2) on December 16
