After vampire fever gripped horror fans for the end of 2024 with the release of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, it's time to welcome the season of the wolf as Leigh Whannell's latest Universal Monsters offering hits the big screen. Wolf Man sees Christopher Abbott taking on the role of Blake, who is attacked by a mysterious, hulking creature while driving on a remote country road with his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth). They take cover in a remote home while the monster stalks them outside, but Charlotte and Ginger soon begin to suspect that's not the only danger as Blake begins to experience some horrifying symptoms following his attack.

This revamping of the classic 1941 werewolf film comes after Whannell's resounding success with The Invisible Man, the 2020 remake of another Universal Monster title that reinvigorated interest in the genre after the disastrous reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. With Whannell's name attached to Wolf Man and the glimpses we've had of the hair-raising creature, anticipation is high for the latest monster flick and first big horror title to hit cinemas in 2025. In preparation, FANGORIA has rounded up 10 essential werewolf films that will have you howling at the moon.

  • Dog Soldiers

    DOG SOLDIERS (2002)

In his directorial debut, British horror director Neil Marshall unleashed one of the scariest werewolf creature designs that has ever hit the big screen in 2002's Dog Soldiers. The following morning, they find the savaged remains of a SAS unit and quickly come under attack by the culprits – a pack of werewolves. They're forced to take refuge in an abandoned home deep in the highlands as the towering creatures huff, puff, and attempt to blow their way into the property.

When a blizzard knocks out power in the town, the residents are forced to take refuge in a lodge owned by Jeanine Sherman (Catherine Curtin). When they discover the body of Jeannie's missing husband Dave, they begin to realize the blackout may not have been accidental and something sinister is preying on the town.
