Cursed towns are a dime a dozen in horror, and yet not a single character ever listens when you yell at the screen, telling them to turn their car around before they can complete their move into what looks like a quaint little village and doom themselves forever. It’s a trope that’ll hopefully never die, especially not when films like Birthrite take advantage of it, and FANGORIA is excited to debut an exclusive clip from the upcoming film, which hits theaters this week.

Directed by Ross Partridge, Birthrite stars Alice Kremelberg, Juani Feliz, Michael Chernus, Patch Darragh, Owen Campbell, Jennifer Lafleur, Henny Russell. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

When a pregnant woman is bequeathed a home from an estranged aunt, she and her girlfriend leave the city behind to begin a new chapter. But when a karmic debt threatens the life of their unborn child, they soon discover their place in the cursed history of the town.

Our exclusive clip sees Kremelberg trying to unpack the home given to her (willingly or not) when she gets a voicemail from a friend. But it’s not of the innocent “sorry to miss you” variety — no, they say something about watching a video from her wedding, having spotted something mysterious and unsettling in the background. It’s from there that she journeys into the home’s library, only to discover a dead body on one of its tables. Definitely not a sign that everything’s going well with the move.

Partridge described Birthrite as an “elegy about our collective consciousness,” about “how certain rights and assumed freedoms have been ripped from us and balanced on the verge of extinction. The film originally made its world premiere at last year’s Popcorn Frights Film Festival, before finally landing in theaters this month.

Birthrite hits theaters and on demand on August 8. Check out our exclusive clip below:
