BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Sequel Series Nearing Pilot With Sarah Michelle Gellar To Return

Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao is set to direct, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman attached to write and showrun.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series is reportedly nearing a pilot order at Hulu, Variety reports today, with the extra exciting news that Miss Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is set to return as the titular slayer.

Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct and produce, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman attached to write, showrun, and executive produce, says Variety. Also executive producing are Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui via Suite B, and Dolly Parton (yes, that Dolly Parton) who will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.

Although Gellar is in talks to return, the Buffy sequel series would apparently focus on a new Slayer, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Late last year, Gellar teased a return to the world of Buffy, saying she was now open to returning for a reboot after previously saying she was “too tired and cranky” to return as Summers, that a reboot of the show would be unnecessary, with her at the helm at least.

Originally airing from 1997 to 2003, Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series of all time, helping to launch the careers of Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg and more. The show sparked a spin-off, Angel, starring David Boreanaz as the titular vamp. A series reboot has been in talks since 2018, with Monica Owusu-Breen originally set to lead the show.
