Día de los Muertos is just around the corner, and Oni Press is whipping up something special to celebrate the occasion. The publisher has collected all four issues of their supernatural mystery series Calavera, P.I. into a brand new trade, and you can exclusively read the entire first issue of the series here, courtesy of FANGORIA.
Out today from Oni, the four-issue trade is written, illustrated, and colored by Marco Finnegan, a cartoonist known for his works on books like Morning Star, Night People, Lizard in a Zoot Suit, and more. The series features letters by Jeff Eckleberry, and variant covers by Ramón K. Pérez, Esteban Sánchez, and J. Gonzo. The book’s synopsis is as follows:
Sometimes it takes a dead man to crack the case!
In 1925, Juan Calavera died a hero. After a career spent outside the law defending the Chicano barrios where the police refused to operate, he earned a reputation for fearlessness . . . and a gunshot in the stomach. Now, five years later, on Día de los Muertos, his restless spirit has been summoned from the grave to help a desperate former colleague unravel a kidnapping all too close to home. With only days to solve the case before he is called back to the underworld, can Calavera reveal the identity of the masked human trafficker known as La Fantasma before tragedy strikes again . . . and solve the mystery of his own murder in the process?
The first issue introduces us to Calavera when he was still alive, a no-nonsense private investigator rescuing people from tragedy. But, after he’s shot, we pick up five years later, when his partner in crime finds herself in grave danger. With her son kidnapped, she heads to Calavera’s grave to summon him, bringing the skeletal PI back from the dead to investigate a brand-new mystery.
Calavera, P.I. is available in stores now. You can read the entire first issue below:
