Oscar-winner Javier Bardem is set to star in a series adaptation of the thriller Cape Fear for Apple TV+, with cinema legends Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese set to executive produce.
Reporting the news earlier today, Deadline reveals that the 10-episode series is created by Nick Antosca (The Act), and will be based on both John D. MacDonald’s novel “The Executioners”, and Scorsese's 1991 remake of the original 1962 Cape Fear.
Per Deadline:
[Cape Fear is] described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (played by Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.
The Cape Fear series differs slightly from the 1957 novel and the two movies, as both husband and wife are lawyers. In the original films, only husband Sam Bowden (played by Gregory Peck and Nick Nolte respectively) was a lawyer.
In J. Lee Thompson's original film, the psychotic Cady was played by Robert Mitchum, while Robert De Niro took on the role for Scorsese's version. Needless to say, Bardem has some big shoes to fill, but anyone who's ever seen No Country for Old Men will have absolutely no doubt that he's going to effortlessly nail the role of the terrifying Cady.
Spielberg's involvement follows his production role on the 1991 film (and initial involvement as developer), and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce alongside the legendary director for Amblin Television.
First announced back in 2023, the Cape Fear series earned a green light once Barden was attached.
Keep an eye out for more updates on the Cape Fear series as we get 'em.
