Companion, the upcoming feature from director Drew Hancock (My Dead Ex) and Barbarian producer Zach Cregger, releases in theaters on January 31, with a brand new twisted trailer today finally revealing the plot of the sci-fi horror thriller.
Starring Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets Heretic) and Jack Quaid (Scream, The Boys), Companion‘s logline (previously tightly under wraps) reads as follows:
Josh's girlfriend Iris (Thatcher) is an android designed to be the perfect, subservient partner. But, since Josh jail-broke the settings of his “sex-bot,” things turn bloody and violent during a weekend getaway in a remote cabin with his friends
Starring alongside Thatcher and Quaid are Lukas Gage (Smile 2, Dead Boy Detectives), Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever, It Lives Inside), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows, Blue Beetle) and Rupert Friend (High Desert, Asteroid City).
If you're worried that today's trailer contains a pretty hefty spoiler, fear not; Hancock promises more twists and turns coming, with Quaid telling EW:
“It was one of the best scripts I've ever read […] I never saw any of the twists coming, but it's not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh.
Thatcher, who is quickly becoming a bonafide scream queen, shared that Companion sees the star drenched in more blood than ever before:
“The wildest day on set is in the trailer where I'm being dragged in the mud… there's so many wild days that I just pulled that out of my ass, but that was pretty tricky […]
Being covered in mud was a little degrading but also badass, and I'm strangely used to being covered in mud — almost every project I've done is blood and mud, but this project tops it. The amount of blood that I had on me topped any amount of blood that I've ever had on me. I don't think you can go much further than that.”
Alongside Cregger, Companion is produced by fellow Barbarian's Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz and Roy Lee. Executive producers are Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner.
