Despite the cult success of Coralie Fargeat’s most recent film, The Substance — including netting a Golden Globe for lead actress Demi Moore — the director has no plans to return to the film’s world of beauty industry-fueled body horror. In a new interview with Variety, she gave very vague details about plans for her next film, but one thing was clear: she’s not interested in prequels or sequels.
“The point of this movie is to bring fresh things to the world,” she said to the outlet. “No sequels, no prequels. I’m going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit.” She wasn’t very forthcoming with details about the next project she has planned, but clearly, it’s going to be a totally different ballgame than the cult hit.
“For now I’m not discussing anything. I’m just enjoying the moment and taking some time as I really want to write my next project,” she told Variety. “It’s slowly starting to be put in motion in the back of my brain and when things calm down I’ll take it from there. It’s going to be totally different [than The Substance] but with a lot of similarities. I love to make bold and surprising films with things that you don’t expect, so definitely that’s what I want to do. And I love the freedom that I gave myself for this film and that’s certainly something I want to keep doing.”
Regardless of where Fargeat takes her career next, there’s no denying that she’s made an indelible mark on Hollywood, and not just with horror fans. The Substance earned $78 million at the box office despite a more limited run than standard blockbusters, and is now, post-Golden Globes, a part of the Academy Awards buzz circling around ahead of nominations on January 17. Whether it will net a nomination (or multiple) is anyone’s guess, but for now, it seems like Fargeat knows exactly what she wants to do next — and we’re ready for it.
The Substance is streaming now on MUBI.
