Tilman Singer‘s Cuckoo, one of 2024's most bizarre and original horror movies, is creeping onto digital from tomorrow, September 17, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow.
Starring Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, Kinds of Kindness), scream king Dan Stevens (Abigail, The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), and Greta Fernandez (A Thief's Daughter), Cuckoo follows:
[…] 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who leaves her American home to live with her father and moves into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König (Stevens), her father's boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen's mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn't seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.
The physical media release, hitting shelves on October 22, features deleted scenes, behind the scenes footage, and interviews.
Shot entirely on 35mm, Cuckoo has been a festival hit following its premiere at SXSW, with NEON taking the film wide as part of their impressive 2024 slate (see also: Longlegs and Immaculate)
In a recent interview with Vogue, Schafer expanded on what drew her to Singer's strange horror:
“I’ve definitely gone through big phases. I feel like [horror] fed my angst in everything that I was stewing in as a teenager […] I wasn’t really looking for a horror movie in particular. I was just looking for a movie. It came into my life after Euphoria season one, and I was starting to think about doing a project other than Euphoria. I really liked the world that Tilman had written, and then I saw his movie Luz, which is just brilliant.”
While Cuckoo might be her first big horror, Schafer is also set to have a role in Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele's mysterious upcoming horror game OD – so it seems like she might be pretty taken with the genre.
Find Cuckoo and hear its call on your digital platform of choosing on September 17, and you can pre-order the Blu-ray or DVD from all good retailers.
