Heart Eyes Rom-com slasher is coming to theaters February 7th, and we sat down with cast members Devon Sawa, Jordana Brewster and Gigi Zumbado to chat about their new rom-com Valentine’s Day slasher, ultimate murder weapons, and most importantly… is the Heart Eyes Killer… sexy?
Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster play a couple of hard-boiled detectives. When it came to the inspiration behind the characters, Brewsters said, “I was thinking about the Gary Sinise character in the Mel Gibson movie Ransom.” In addition to Sinise’s sling sporting detective, Brewster had another fictional law enforcement official in mind — the GOAT, Jodie Foster’s character Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs.
Sawa gets to go a little scuzzy on the screen, and it is a delight to watch. He shared, “I kind of thought about this guy, as you know those viral videos you see of the cops being busted for breaking all the rules.”
Zumbado plays Allie’s (Oliva Holt) ride or die co-worker and friend, Monica. She said Monica’s I’ve got you” mentality is not a far cry from how she approaches her relationships. “I'm one of three girls, so I'm a girl's girl, I always stick up for my sisters. I think she definitely is there for Allie in that aspect I think she needs to almost hold the mirror to her, show her her power, and that she can bring it out.”
Bringing out your friends’ inner warrior is a super power in itself, but when it comes to a tangible weapon for going head-to-head with a slasher, Zumbado goes for “a good old heel.”
And which of Heart Eyes’ body parts would be her target? “I have zero aim I'm not an athletic bitch, so I think the heel's just going to go and we just close our eyes.” Ok, we’re hoping for the best, Gigi!
The design of the Heart Eyes Killer is the work of FX legend Tony Gardner, who has crafted an iconic mask with his Alterian team. When the cast saw the Heart Eyes look for the first time, Brewster described it as “Creepy,” adding, “I was very surprised. It really really wasn't what I thought it was going to be.”
Sawa first saw the complete look after getting off a long flight and heading straight to set: “They were shooting a scene with Olivia and Mason and Heart Eyes, and it was nothing like I imagined. It blew my expectations. It was phenomenal.”
When Gigi first saw the leather-clad killer with the Alterian-designed mask, she knew she was working on something special, “It excited me just because the quality was like ‘oh we're doing a good movie. We're making a good film here.”
Sawa is familiar with Gardner’s work, but he was still surprised by the final result: “I knew Tony Gardner, who did all the stuff for Chucky, did the mask, so I knew it was going to be good. I just imagined it was going to be some sort of like the heart eye emoji. I was expecting to see this funny little yellow thing, and it's really kind of a cool color. I think it’s going to be iconic.”
Not only is the Heart Eyes Killer a scary and sinister presence. But if you ask Devon Sawa, it’s also “A little sexy. It's a little sexy. It's a little sexy.”
Brewster and Zumbado didn’t quite agree on that point, in agreement that “No, it's not sexy!”
But Sawa held steadfast, attempting to help them understand the sexiness factor, “You know, in Pulp Fiction… Forget about it…”
We’ll back over cover boy Devon on this one. We have to admit… Yeah, the Heart Eyes Killer is actually kinda sexy.
