Editorial Guidelines
The mission of the FANGORIA editorial team is to bring readers informed, compelling and, whenever possible, exclusive coverage of the world of horror entertainment.
Editorial Standards
FANGORIAโs writers are expected to bring with them professionalism, knowledge, and respect โ both toward their subject, and toward our readers. FANGORIAโs editorial policy demands that our content is well-researched, engaging to read, and backed by our writersโ and editorsโ deep knowledge of, and abiding love for, the horror genre. Our writers are required to adhere to our in-house style guide and, put simply, expected to know what theyโre talking about.FANGORIA does not aim to be academic content; rather, we adopt a populist voice meant to engage readers of many different age groups and demographics. We strive to smartly and accessibly celebrate the horror genre and those who create it. Under our editorial umbrella, we insist on a strict code of ethics and professionalism from both our staff and our freelance contractors.
Editorial Autonomy
FANGORIAโs editorial team operates independently of its parent company and ad sales team, in order to guarantee editorial impartiality. The publisher may advise and request consideration, but editorial coverage is at the sole discretion of the editorial staff. Coverage of any endeavor happening within the Fango brand will carry a note of disclosure, and โadvertorials,โ sponsored content and other endeavors involving paid transactions will be marked as such.
Reviews, NDAs and Embargoes
The FANGORIA editorial team observes and adheres to industry embargoes and NDAs with respect to an agreed upon date; NDAs and embargoes do not impact editorial reviews or opinion. Reviews are compensated at a flat rate. We endeavor to feature a wide array of voices in our reviews while holding our critics to a high professional standard. Critics may need to watch these films via supplied screenings or viewing links; in the event a critic must purchase a ticket to a screening, they will be reimbursed by FANGORIA for that ticket. Reviews and opinions are solely those of the reviewer; the editorial team does not influence or affect any review published, nor does the studio or filmmaker being reviewed, regardless of past or future coverage of said studio or filmmaker. Similarly, reviewersโ relationships with the filmmakers and studios are vetted and bulletproofed against any potential breach of impartiality.
Coverage Impartiality
FANGORIA staff and freelancers may accept offers of travel and lodging in order to cover events of interest to our readers (e.g., theme park events, set visits, press conferences). Such offers and accommodations do not impact our ultimate editorial coverage, and entities providing such access do not have approval of the resulting coverage.
Conflicts of Interest
FANGORIA is a unique entity that has impacted many people involved with the genre throughout its history. Contributors have become filmmakers; filmmakers have become contributors. We think itโs an exciting thing to occasionally bring filmmakers onto the masthead โ either to discuss their own work, or that of their colleagues โ and when those whoโve graced our pages as contributors cross over into the realm of subject matter, we are excited and proud to celebrate their work. That said, this material is and will always be separate from any reviews we might publish of any filmmakersโ work, and one does not impact the other.
