Zombies are one of the most explored corners of the horror genre. From George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead to more recent hits like Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, and even the very successful Resident Evil video game series, it’s a sub-genre that’s been explored in just about every way you can imagine. Or perhaps not! The folks at Tiny Onion and Image Comics have something very unique coming our way this fall in the form of Everything Dead & Dying and we’ve got an exclusive glimpse at what’s to come.

Fango is proud to present four preview pages from the first issue of Everything Dead & Dying, which you can check out below. The book hails from writer Tate Brombal and artist Jacob Phillips. So, what makes it so unique in the realm of zombie storytelling? Well, it’s not purely about surviving the undead and killing those who have turned. It is, instead, for some people, learning to coexist with these zombies. The synopsis for the book reads as follows:

“Jack Chandler is the sole survivor of the zombie apocalypse in his rural farming community, but rather than eliminate them, he has chosen to continue living alongside the undead—including the husband and adopted daughter he fought so hard to have. But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of those who hope to kill his family for good.”

In addition to the above preview pages, we also have several different variant covers from the first issue, which hits stands in September. Brombal and Phillips' book is a five-issue limited series, so it also doesn't represent an overly long commitment, which can be a bit intimidating when it comes to comics at times.

“This is a project that definitely sprang to mind during the early quarantine days of 2020,”  Brombal explains to FANGORIA. “I was holed up by myself for two weeks witnessing the world caught in suspense and fear with a surging death count. I remember hearing true horror stories from my friends in New York. How could we survive these deaths? This unimaginable trauma? I remember one day an image came to me. It was a portrait of a man sitting at the edge of his bed surrounded by darkness, and he was so heavy with grief and burdened with responsibility…then I noticed his undead family standing around him, waiting to be fed.”

“I think it’s important to look outside of the immediate comparisons when approaching something like this from a visual standpoint,” Phillips added. “Yes, we want it to read as a zombie book, but I think it gets more interesting when bringing in ideas from different types of stories. That’s where you can begin to carve out something new. Having said that, I can’t help but bring the final scene of Shaun of the Dead to mind.”
