Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story, a new reimagining of the Dracula legacy from Lucky and Imitation Girl director Natasha Kermani, hits select theaters tomorrow, July 11, via Shudder and RLJE Films, and we're bringing you an exclusive clip to celebrate.
Based on the short story by bestselling author Joe Hill, Abraham's Boys stars Titus Welliver (Bosch), Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil), Judah Mackey (The Young And The Restless), Aurora Perrineau (Westworld) and Brady Hepner (The Black Phone), and follows Max and Rudy Van Helsing, who have spent their lives under the strict and overprotective rule of their father, Abraham:
Unaware of his dark past, they struggle to understand his paranoia and increasingly erratic behavior. But when they begin to uncover the violent truths behind their father’s history with Dracula, their world unravels, forcing them to confront the terrifying legacy they were never meant to inherit.
Hill’s short story was originally published in 2004, as a part of the anthology The Many Faces of Van Helsing, which also featured stories from Tanith Lee, Brian Hodge, Rita Oakes, and more.
In a recent interview with Love Horror, Kermani expanded more on her adaptation, and how Hill's original story provided an important textual basis, rather than a loose inspiration:
“I think we were very loyal to the short story […] I think I was just in love with the short story, and the short story is in the film. So everything in the short story is basically in the film. It was such a pleasure because the material is so deep, that it was just, going back into Bram Stoker’s Dracula and pulling all those pieces together and just, playing it all out to its inevitable conclusion.”
