Japanese Horror Game EXIT 8 Getting Live-Action Adaptation From Toho

The Genki Kawamura-directed feature heads to the EFM later this week.

Toho Co. Ltd, the legendary Japanese production studio behind Godzilla, Ring, One Missed Call and much more, is handling a live action adaptation of The Exit 8, a liminal walking simulator from Kotake Create.

Genki Kawamura (producer on Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster and Makoto Shinkai's Your Name) is set to write and direct the “labyrinthine horror” said to have undertones of Alice in Wonderland and Squid Game. According to DeadlineExit 8 heads to the European Film Market next week, looking to launch sales for a U.S. release.

Released back in 2023, The Exit 8 sees the player walking through a Japanese metro station passageway, trying to spot inaccuracies to reach the exit of the station.

A (Google translated) statement from Kotake Create reads as follows (and thanks to the good folks at Bloody Disgusting for bringing this to our attention):

Exit 8 will be made into a live-action movie! I had no idea that the game would be released at the end of November 2023, and that the movie version would be announced about a year later, so I am filled with surprise and gratitude.

When I was approached about making a movie, I was wondering how to turn a game without a story into a movie, but I think it's an interesting movie without destroying the worldview and atmosphere of Exit 8! I also got to tour the filming location, and it was really amazing to see that underground passage and the old man right in front of me! We hope you look forward to it! I'm also really looking forward to the release!

The Exit 8 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam. Look out for more Exit 8 news as we get it. For more 2025 horror news, read our rundown of this year's most anticipated releases.
