It's October, and it's time for our favorite horror movies set on Halloween. Is there a spooky movie more Halloween than Michael Dougherty's darkly beautiful anthology Trick ‘r Treat? That's a topic for debate. But it's a celebration of the holiday and sets up the rules of Halloween with style to burn. It also has the true spirit of horror, with stories that don't skimp on violence or gore.
The films on this list look at our favorite holiday and the best time of the year through the eyes of the filmmakers, actors, and crew. Some are more lyrical and gorgeously filmed, and some are videotaped found footage nightmares that want to involve you in a more visceral manner. Some have buckets of blood and guts, and some coax their horrors from the theatre of the mind. It doesn't matter what approach they take; what matters is the love of Halloween and the desire to create horrifying cinematic magic.
Let's delve into some of our favorite fright films set on or around Halloween, shall we? Candy?
-
All Hallows Eve, Terrifier, Terrifier 2
TERRIFIER 2 (Credit: IMDB) Damien Leone's creation, Art the Clown, started in his Halloween-themed anthology film All Hallows Eve, in which Art is featured in the first and third stories, The 9th Circle and Terrifier. These stories are the basis of the second film in the trilogy, Terrifier, released in 2016. It's a slasher film centered on Art the Clown stalking two sisters on Halloween night.
The immensely popular Terrifier 2 was released in 2022 and not only hit big at the box office but received critical praise, especially for Lauren LaVera's performance as Sienna Shaw. It adds another clown character, The Little Pale Girl (Amelie McLain), and has elements of surreal comedy among the wildly gory kills.
Candy Corn
CANDY CORN (Credit: IMDB) Josh Hasty's Candy Corn is an independent Halloween horror film that deserves to be celebrated more. It stars Courtney Gains, Pancho Moler, P. J. Soles, Sky Elobar, and Tony Todd, and concerns a young man tormented and killed by bullies but resurrected by one of the local carnies who takes pity on him.
It is genuinely creepy, bloody, and clearly the work of a filmmaker who loves horror and reveres the Halloween spirit. The love of candy corn is real in this film.
The Crow
THE CROW (Credit: IMDB) While The Crow is usually classed as a supernatural hero film, I believe it is a horror film. It has everything: a rock musician, Eric Draven, resurrected as a revenant returning to Earth to enact supernatural vengeance on the criminals who killed him and raped and critically wounded his fiancée, Shelley, on Devil's Night, the night before Halloween. His soul is brought back by a crow, who then helps him find the killers.
If that's not horror, I don't know what is. Directed by Alex Proyas, it stars Brandon Lee, Ernie Hudson, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd, Bai Ling, and Michael Wincott. Tragically, Lee died on the set after being fatally wounded by a prop gun, but his outstanding work in this film should always be remembered.
Dark Harvest
DARK HARVEST (Credit: IMDB) Director David Slade is back with this fright film, in which a small town's boys fight against a monster named Sawtooth Jack on Halloween night. Casey Likes, E'myri Crutchfield, Dustin Ceithamer, Elizabeth Reaser, and Jeremy Davies star in the film that was adapted from the novel of the same name. Dark Harvest has flown under the radar since it was released digitally with one night of theatrical release on October 13.
It's always a good idea to check out Slade's films; his second film was the brutal vampire film 30 Days of Night, which wasn't appreciated properly when it was released, but has since been reassessed critically, especially since its star, Josh Hartnett, has returned to horror in M. Night Shyamalan's Trap, and the film's actors and performances have aged like fine wine.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow
DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW (Credit: IMDB) Dark Night of the Scarecrow is an eerie TV movie about a gentle man, Charles Eliot “Bubba” Ritter, with the mind of a child, who is friends with a young girl. When a dog attacks the young girl, the locals blame Bubba, especially the angry mailman, Otis Hazelrigg. A posse led by Otis kills Bubba, but they escape punishment in court. On Halloween, a supernatural vengeance starts to take out the men accused of the crime.
This gem was created by J.D. Feigelson and directed by novelist Frank De Felitta. Because it aired on television, it's light on gore but not on atmosphere and dread. It stars Larry Drake, Charles Durning, Tonya Crowe, and Jocelyn Brando.
Ghostwatch
GHOSTWATCH (Credit: IMDB) Ghostwatch is the legendary British BBC broadcast of a horror mockumentary presented as a live television broadcast. It was hosted by an actual news presenter, Michael Parkinson, which lent the broadcast authenticity. The broadcast led to a million calls to the BBC complaining about the film and praising its quality.
The plot concerns an alleged poltergeist in a family home and a paranormal investigation that goes wildly out of control. Created by Stephen Volk (Gothic, The Guardian) and directed by Lesley Manning, it starred Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith, Craig Charles, and Gillian Bevan. It was the British television equivalent of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast.
Halloween
HALLOWEEN (Credit: IMDB) I would be remiss if I failed to include the Halloween film series on this list. The film's name tells you that every movie in the franchise takes place on Halloween. Starting with John Carpenter's classic film in 1978, through the original series sequels, then to the Rob Zombie reboot films, and finally the trilogy of David Gordon Green movies that seemingly brought the entire franchise to an end with a film fittingly titled Halloween Ends.
If you want one of the most popular Halloween movies and the prototype of Halloween horror films, with thirteen sequels or reboots to its credit, this is it.
Hell Fest
HELL FEST (Credit: IMDB) Hell Fest is set on Halloween night when a group of friends goes to a traveling horror show where a serial killer, The Other, is at work in the best hiding place ever. Think about it. Everyone expects to see bodies everywhere at a scary event, so the murders aren't even noticed by the crowds of people.
It is directed by Gregory Plotkin (Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension) and written by Seth M. Sherwood (Leatherface), Blair Butler, and Akela Cooper (Malignant, M3GAN). Genre stalwart Tony Todd stars in the film, along with Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, and Bex Taylor-Klaus.
The Jester/The Jester 2
THE JESTER (Credit: IMDB) Director Colin Krawchuk's burgeoning series of films has introduced horror viewers to a new malefic villain named The Jester. After making three short films about this mysterious being, Krawchuk made his first feature film starring Michael Sheffield, Lelia Symington, and Delaney White. In it, two sisters try to reconcile and stay alive on Halloween after discovering their small town is more dangerous than they thought.
In The Jester 2, a young magician must fight for his life on Halloween night against the evil magic of the town's supernatural killer. The second film focuses more on magic and the newbie magician who tries to use his skills to fight The Jester.
Late Night with the Devil
LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL (Credit: Shudder) Late Night with the Devil is the horror hit that stars David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Ingrid Torelli, Rhys Auteri, Georgina Haig, and Josh Quong Tart, and co-written, co-directed, and edited by twin filmmakers Colin and Cameron Cairnes. It got a lot of notice when it was released in 2024. But the film's story, about a televised exorcism that goes horribly wrong, is set on Halloween.
The exorcism is a last-ditch effort from the host and producer of a late-night talk show to score in the ratings, but they all get much more terror than they bargained for when they try to reach the being that hides inside a innocent young girl.
Murder Party (2007)
MURDER PARTY (Credit: IMDB) Jeremy Saulnier's Murder Party is a hilarious horror comedy set on Halloween about a lonely guy, Christopher Hawley, who finds an invite to a “Murder Party” and, for some reason, decides to go. Probably out of loneliness, he makes a cardboard costume, bakes raisin pumpkin bread, and bids farewell to his cat, only to find that his life is in danger.
Little does he know that the invite is to a trap where angry art students want to kill someone to create art to impress an art dealer. The film stars Chris Sharp, Sandy Barnett, and frequent Saulnier collaborator and director Macon Blair. It's funny and really quite gruesome.
Night of the Demons/Night of the Demons 2/ Night of the Demons 3
NIGHT OF THE DEMONS (Credit: IMDB) Kevin S. Tenney's Night of the Demons is a fun 80s horror comedy movie set on Halloween night, when friends go to a party in an abandoned mortuary. Why? Because it's a scary place to party, that's why. It stars Cathy Powell as goth queen Amelia Kinkade, horror darling Linnea Quigley, and Hal Havins. It's pure 80s horror that is entertaining and wild at the same time.
The film is perhaps most famous for Angela Franklin's seductive dance to Bauhaus's song Stigmata Martyr as she turns into a demon. Angela is the only character appearing in the entire series; the second film is also set on Halloween.
Pet Sematary II
PET SEMATARY II (Credit: IMDB) Mary Lambert's sequel to Pet Sematary goes bigger than the first with multiple resurrections. Halloween night is the centerpiece of a scene where the young boys and new friends, Jeff and Drew, go to the Mi'kmaq cemetery to tell each other spooky stories, and it gets broken up by Gus, a local policeman, and Drew's stepfather.
The film stars Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, Clancy Brown, and Jared Rushton, and features a killer dog instead of a killer cat, but that doesn't make it any safer for the family at the center of the peril.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK (Credit: IMDB) André Øvredal's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is based on the book series written by Alvin Schwartz. Set on Halloween in 1968, a group of teenage friends find the book written by the daughter of Bellows' family, Sarah, in a secret room. One of the children, Stella, takes the book home, and as she reads the book, new stories appear and play out on the screen.
Sarah is sending a message, but what is it? You have to watch the movie to find out. The film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Gil Bellows, and Dean Norris.
Tales of Halloween
TALES OF HALLOWEEN (Credit: IMDB) This Halloween anthology film, Tales of Halloween, is one where you definitely get your money's worth—clocking in with ten interwoven segments directed by Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Lucky McKee, Andrew Kasch and John Skipp, Paul Solet, Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, Dave Parker. If you wanted a movie that really brings some of horror's best storytellers about the best night of the year, this is the movie to check out.
The movie has an equally impressive cast list with Adrienne Barbeau, Barbara Crampton, Lin Shaye, Barry Bostwick, Sam Witwer, Greg Grunberg, Pat Healy, Alex Essoe, Clare Kramer, Jose Pablo Cantillo, John Savage, and Caroline Williams.
Trick 'r Treat
TRICK 'R TREAT (Credit: IMDB) How could we forget Trick ‘r Treat? It is an example of a perfectly crafted terror tale about Halloween, set on Halloween. With its iconic character, Sam, and the surprising and bloody stories that make up the narrative, this cult classic was destined to be a Halloween favorite. Written and directed by Michael Dougherty, it was his feature film debut as a director, which makes the achievement even more stunning. It stars Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin, and Brian Cox.
Trick ‘r Treat is a scary movie that is always perfect for Halloween and has stories that seem like they are eternal, like they have always been with us, even before they existed. There's still no definitive word on the long-gestating sequel, but Trick ‘r Treat is a chilling gift to us all, even without one.
V/H/S/Halloween
V/H/S/HALLOWEEN (Credit: Shudder) The latest installment in the found-footage horror franchise, the eighth, is finally all about Halloween. V/H/S/Halloween has a very nice ring to it. How did it take this long? Directors Bryan M. Ferguson, Casper Kelly, Micheline Pitt-Norman, R.H. Norman, Alex Ross Perry, Paco Plaza, and Anna Zlokovic do the honors in this frightful and funny ode to being in danger and really scared on your favorite holiday.
The five stories tell tales of the dangers of trick or treating, a peculiar and deadly party centered on eyeballs in Madrid, terror at a very strange candy factory in a parallel reality, a serial killer on the hunt for children, and a home haunt that becomes all too real. The frame story concerns a soda that you probably shouldn't drink if you want to stay alive.
WNUF Halloween Special
WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (Credit: IMDB) Chris LaMartina's WNUF Halloween Special has the setup of a Halloween special presented by the local TV station WNUF. It centers on one of the station reporters conducting a paranormal investigation at a house where an entire family was brutally murdered. The film has commercial breaks as if the film were an actual broadcast taped on video.
It's an excellent frame for what initially seems to be a demonic possession story, but might be a serial killer story after all. The only way that you will be able to judge for yourself is by diving into the film.
