It was really only a matter of time but now we know for sure. Warner Bros. and New Line are indeed looking to keep the Final Destination franchise going as a seventh installment in the popular horror series is officially in the works. The news comes in the wake of Final Destination Bloodlines wrapping up its theatrical run as the most successful entry in the franchise to date.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Final Destination 7 is a go at the studio. Lori Evans Taylor, who co-wrote this year’s Bloodlines, has been tapped to return to pen the screenplay for the latest sequel. Specific plot details are being kept under wraps at this time. Not to get into spoiler territory here for those who haven’t seen the latest installment, but let’s just say there aren’t all that many cast members to bring back. So, it’s likely a mostly new cast will be brought in to try and cheat Death at his own game.

Craig Perry and franchise veteran Sheila Hanahan Taylor are returning to produce alongside Jon Watts, Dianne McGunigle and Toby Emmerich, with Warren Zide on board as an executive producer. No word yet on who will be in the director’s chair but Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein directed Bloodlines. It would seem logical to have them return.

That’s because Final Destination Bloodlines is by far the biggest box office hit in the history of the franchise. Despite a 14-year absence after Final Destination 5 in 2011, audiences turned up in droves to see the revival when it hit theaters earlier this year it pulled in $286 million worldwide, ranking as one of the biggest horror movies of the year. The previous highest-grosser in the series was The Final Destination with $187 million. The six movies combined have pulled in $943 million globally, making it one of the biggest horror franchises born in the 2000s. Needless to say, doing another sequel was a no-brainer.

One of the most interesting things is that the sixth installment was originally going to go directly to HBO Max. But luckily, the brass at Warner Bros. wised up and realized there was far more money to be made on the big screen, even going so far as to give Bloodlines an IMAX release. It all panned out and now a once-dead horror franchise is back, bigger than ever.
